2. Jerky Treats — The FDA’s Longest-Running Investigation
Between 2007 and 2015, the FDA received more than 6,200 reports of illness related to jerky pet treats, including over 1,140 deaths in dogs and cats. Most of the treats were chicken, duck, or sweet potato jerky imported from China.
Symptoms included vomiting, diarrhea, kidney failure, and Fanconi syndrome (a rare kidney condition). Despite years of investigation, the exact cause was never definitively identified — but the FDA issued repeated warnings.
Many similar products remain on the market today. The FDA recommends checking the country of origin on all jerky treats before purchasing.
